My time participating in the Valencia County Summer Internship Program has been nothing short of a valuable learning experience. Like most kids my age, I applied for the internship with the sole purpose of getting the check, but my time has provided me with so much more than just money. Not only have I gotten the opportunity to participate in the JJAB (Juvenile Justice Advisory Board), but I have obtained skills that will follow me well into my adult years.

One of the most important being teamwork, an obvious lesson that has found its way to the backburner in my time. My mentor and the others in my department have built a family. They don’t argue when something goes wrong and, no matter how busy, they always make sure to help their peers. The sense of community in this workspace is unparalleled to any I’ve seen before. Through my training, none of my coordinators have put me down or made me feel less than because I was struggling to comprehend the task at hand. (And believe me, that happens a lot)
My skills on the computer have increased drastically, thanks to the help I have received throughout my eight weeks. I’ve also learned how to operate our printer and shredder, which was exciting. I have attended training meetings that have increased my knowledge on job etiquette and how to be professional in the workplace. The opportunity to obtain this knowledge is one that I am deeply grateful for. Not only have my instructors shared with me skills I can use in the workplace, but they have also shared life lessons and stories.
This internship was nothing I had expected it to be. It has exceeded my expectations time and time again. I truly cannot express the gratitude I have for this program. I look forward to applying again next summer. Hopefully it will teach me as many things, if not more than, this summer has.
