The Torrance County Summer Internship Program allows students (ages 14 to 18) to gain valuable work experience, explore possible career options and add a little money to their bank account, by working with area businesses. Complete Application Includes:

Must be 14 to 18 years old.
Must be able to get to and from their internship site.
Must follow all the guidelines of the program and the work site.
Participants under the age of 16 MUST obtain a work permit to participate.

City Clerk's Office Project Overview: The Office of the City Clerk is a service department within the municipal government upon which the City Council, all City Departments, and the general public rely for information regarding the operations and legislative history of the City. This summer’s intern will assist in the preparation of a formal request for quote’s (RFQ’s) to procure a public records request management software system and document destruction services. This internship will provide you with the opportunity to conduct research, analyze and interpret information, and gain hands on experience in the public procurement process. You will also gain experience in records and information management by assisting with the proper handling of records, conducting records inventory, implementing retention scheduling procedures and making records available to the public to promote government transparency. Community Development - Housing Division Project Overview: The Housing Authority of the City of Torrance administers the City's Rental Housing Assistance Programs. These Assistance Programs are designed to provide financial and technical assistance services to income eligible individuals, families, senior citizens, disabled and handicapped persons. Their goal is to help individuals find stable, quality affordable housing opportunities throughout the local community. This internship provides the opportunity to learn about the federally-funded, Section 8 Rental Assistance Program, including its rules, regulations, and requirements.
This internship provides the opportunity of researching, collecting data, and preparing reports on rent reasonableness and rent comparability in the City. This data will assist in determining current local market comparable rental rates specific to the City of Torrance to assist the Authority in making Rent Reasonableness Determinations. The intern will also assist with surveying other Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) on their implementation of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Equity Plan and the Housing Opportunity through Modernization Act of 2016 (HOTMA), which includes amendments pertaining to income reviews for public housing and HUD's Section 8 programs.
After this summer, you will leave with a better understanding of the role of Public Housing Authorities, including federal housing programs, rent reasonableness determinations, and HUD. Community Services - Recreation Project Overview: The Community Services Department has five divisions, two of which deal with the parks and booking of parks and facilities. The Facility Booking office is seeking the creation of a comprehensive digital brochure. This brochure would allow the public to digitally view the City’s park and facility rental options, pricing information, and provide answers to a list of typical questions that the public might ask regarding park and facility booking. The intern will research digital brochure designs, take photos, collect information about services and facility rentals, and update rental applications and pricing sheets. The goal of this project is to create a digital, comprehensive park and facility booking brochure that is engaging, interactive, and user-friendly. You will learn about Park Services and Facility Booking, and how it fits in with the department, how to design digital brochures and post to webpages, and the value of providing enhanced engagement and creating a better user experience for booking a City park or facility. Community Services - Library Project Overview: The Community Services Department has five divisions, one of which is the Library. The Library, which has six locations, is seeking an intern who can analyze, suggest, and assist in the creation of a dynamic online presence including evaluating the Library’s current website, social media activity, and the community/audience interaction with both.
The intern will research websites, take photos, collect information about services, and suggest improvements based on their research. The goal of this project is to create a dynamic digital presence for the Library that customers and non-customers will find engaging, friendly, user friendly, and worth visiting. You will learn about Library and City Services and how it fits in with the department, web design, social media, how to design and post to webpages, and the value of providing enhanced engagement and creating a better user experience.
Finance - Risk Management Project Overview: The Risk Management Division provides a comprehensive range of risk management and administrative services to City Departments and the public. As a division of the Finance Department, the Risk Management Division is responsible for the administration of risk, insurance, liability, and safety programs.
This summer’s intern will develop reports, presentations, and training materials to communicate and promote industry claim best practices, as well as assist and support, as needed, in various other claims and risk mitigation activities, including learning risk identification and analysis within general City operations. The summer intern will also assist with streamlining the training and development process of the city’s workforce by assisting with the City’s Employee Training Matrix. This matrix provides guidance for management to identify common employee training requirements to help manage and monitor City employees’ progress through essential training programs.
This internship will provide the opportunity to receive mentoring and supervised practical training and exposure with a public entity related to the identification of, assessment and mitigation of risks associated with physical and liability claims, strategy implementation and claim programs. The intern will learn of the various training curriculum and requirements of city staff and assist with ensuring that employees have the knowledge and skills they need to perform their job duties safely. Human Resources Project Overview: The Human Resources Department provides a full range of services to the City’s employees and its various departments, including recruitment and selection, employee recognition, and policy and program compliance. Their mission is to attract, develop, and retain an exceptional workforce in partnership with all city departments.
This summer’s intern will work on researching and developing content for the Department’s social media accounts and website. The goal will be to create a user-friendly Human Resources website that is both informative and visually appealing. The intern will be responsible for taking photos, developing marketing material, and visual content to promote recruitments to the public.
The summer intern will also assist with compiling a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Manual focused on recruitment and selection. These procedures will provide standard processes for posting vacant positions, developing exam plans, and recruiting for various positions throughout the City. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical while providing hands on exposure to human resources operations. Civil Service Project Overview: The Civil Service Division manages the City's Volunteer Program. The City's various volunteer programs provide an avenue by which the City and its citizens can work together to achieve the goals and objectives set forth in the Strategic Plan. Volunteerism allows residents to contribute time and skills in various ways to the community, enriching their lives as well as the lives of others. This summer's intern will work closely with the Citywide Volunteer Coordinator to manage and update the volunteer records of all registered City volunteers. The goal is to ensure that all active volunteers have been properly registered and their information is accurate and up to date. The summer intern will assist with volunteer management which will include creating a systematic plan for recruiting, engaging, and coordinating volunteers, as well as updating the City's volunteer website.
Torrance Transit - Human Resources Project Overview: Torrance Transit is a municipally operated public transportation agency in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. The agency directly operates a fleet of 63, 40-foot buses and a network of eleven (11) fixed-route bus lines. The mission of Torrance Transit is to provide safe, reliable, inexpensive and courteous transportation to our customers--the people who live, work and do business in the City of Torrance and the region.
This summer’s intern will work closely with the Human Resources staff assigned to the Transit Department. The intern will assist with talent acquisition, which will include researching and developing recruitment plans for promoting and marketing essential Transit positions, including the Bus Operator Career Ladder. The intern will also assist with answering frequently asked questions by those interested in starting a career with the City of Torrance, as well as organizing and updating recruitment tracking lists. The intern will analyze recruitment data and provide recommendations on marketing strategies for capturing a wider applicant pool.
This internship is designed to be both educational and practical while providing hands on exposure to human resources operations and includes career development, such as exposure to job fairs, training on conducting reference checks and employment verifications, and training in the widely used public sector HRIS – NeoGov.
